Il Ringhieri (il suo nome secolare era Pompeo Ulisse, poi mutato in Francesco allorché prese i voti), monaco ulivetano e lettore di teologia, è noto soprattutto per la sua produzione tragica, che incontrò notevole popolarità nell'Italia del Settecento e che le compagnie teatrali amarono spesso rappresentare con grande abbondanza di spettacolari effetti scenici. Definito sprezzantemente "il tragico del volgo e degli Ebrei" dal Napoli-Signorelli (sia per il facile successo popolare che per le numerose trame attinte all'Antico Testamento), è stato però anche epitetato come il "più eretico d'ogni altro frate tragediante in quel secolo" per la sua estrema libertà nei confronti delle regole di unità aristoteliche. Trattasi dell'intera produzione tragica, generalmente d'argomento sacro, cristiano o biblico, di Pompeo Ulisse Ringhieri, monaco olivetano (che in religione mutò il nome di battesimo in Francesco, nato ad Imola nel 1721 ed ivi morto nel1787). Spirito "eretico" più d'ogni altro in quel secolo, "fu, tra i suoi contemporanei, il solo autore di tragedie che godesse d'una vera popolarità., (anche se) i ben pensanti, i buongustai devoti dell'aristocratico rigore dell'arte, lo chiamavano con cordiale disprezzo il tragico del volgo" (Bertana p. 268-9).
