Les réponses fournies par les partisans d'une falsification n'ayant le plus souvent pas été entièrement convaincantes, le problème du cui bono a été fréquemment utilisé comme argument difficilement réfutable par les tenants de l'authenticité. On serait en droit de sétonner doublement en rencontrant ici Ausone. Tout dabord parce quil est fort possible quil ait été chrétien. Je ne prends pas position dans cette controverse ; en réalité, ce point na guère dimportance. Ausone a peut-être adhéré superficiellement à la religion nouvelle, le fait quil commence benoîtement sa journée par une prière ne signifie pas grand-chose. On doit le compter au nombre de ceux que les problèmes religieux laissent au fond indifférents. Son ½uvre en tout cas est dinspiration purement païenne et ce nest quoccasionnellement quelle reflète les préoccupations de la pensée politique et patriotique chrétienne, alors en pleine crise de transformation. Sur le plan littéraire comme sur le plan des idées politiques, Ausone reste strictement dans la ligne des poncifs du nationalisme profane, il ne les critique nullement comme font la plupart des chrétiens. Cest pourquoi les pages qui lui sont consacrées doivent sintercaler ici. -- Lautre motif détonnement que lon pourrait avoir ici serait de voir souvrir notre enquête sur un personnage aussi insignifiant quAusone. En effet, son ½uvre noffre que peu de données utiles sur les problèmes qui nous intéressent. Il ne semble guère atteint de cette inquiétude qui se manifeste chez la plupart des écrivains des dernières générations païennes. Cette insouciance sexplique en partie par le fait quAusone, qui occupe à juste titre la première place dans notre étude diachronique, est un homme de la première moitié du siècle, un vieillard au moment de la catastrophe dAndrinople.
