Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. Sharks Are Caught at Night is a dramatic, first‑person account of nighttime shark fishing in the waters off West Africa, written by French adventurer François Poli. The book blends reportage, maritime adventure, and natural‑history observation, presenting shark hunting as both a dangerous profession and a cultural tradition. Poli describes the techniques used by local fishermen—hand‑lines, baiting strategies, night‑lighting, and the brutal physical struggle once a shark is hooked. The narrative emphasizes the tension between man and sea: unpredictable weather, the risk of capsizing, the violence of hooked sharks thrashing in the dark, and the constant threat of injury or death. Beyond the action, Poli offers insight into the fishermen themselves: their motivations, superstitions, camaraderie, and the economic pressures that drive them into perilous waters. The book also touches on shark behavior, species differences, and the ecological realities of mid‑20th‑century commercial sharking. The tone is gritty, immediate, and experiential—an adventure narrative grounded in real danger rather than romanticized seafaring. This English translation preserves the urgency and starkness of the original French text. THIS book is in fine condition with a very good dust jacket.
