LORD OF THE RINGS (3 volumes): No. 1164 of 1750 copies, 7th printing (2002), illustrations by Ingahild Grathmer (pseudonym for Margarethe II, the Queen of Denmark) drawn by Eric Fraser. All five volume are bound in identical fashion in quarter dark brown wassa goatskin with hand woven Indian silk sides by Smith Settle of Olney, York. Calligraphy across all five volumes is by John Andrews. The three LOTR volumes are housed together in one slipcase and the Hobbit and the Silmarillion have their own slipcases. Top edges gilt, silk ribbons, and calligraphic titling on book spines in gilt. The slipcases have scalloped top and bottom edges at their openings and are identically covered with the same dark brown wassa goatskin with elaborate gilt titling on side panels. The three LOTR books and the Hobbit are protected with a clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dust wrappers. The slipcase for the Silmarillion is tight-fitting and the book must be gently shaken from the slipcase to necessitate and begin removal; the dust wrapper is omitted from this book for this reason._____CONDITION: All five volumes and their slipcases are in fine ("as new") condition. No scratches, no writing, no rubbing, no issues. _____DISCUSSION: Tolkien collectors will endlessly debate which is/are the preferred editions, a pointless exercise since tastes vary widely. The Folio Society Limited Editions are deluxe, carefully printed by the Bath Press, Bath, on fine quality papers (Caxton Wove or St. Paul's Wove paper). The black-and-white illustrations are restrained, evocative and elegant, a welcome respite form the full color, in your face illustrations derived from sci-fi / dystopian / doomsday literature which are the current rage. The book has top edge gilt and a silk page ribbon. There are maps for endpapers, with Thror's map at the front and a map of Wilderland at the back, plus several intricate illustrations by Eric Fraser. Bound by Smith Settle of Otley, Yorks. A stunning book in near fine condition. There are some very minor imperfections to the Indian silk sides, simply as a result of it being hand woven. All four books come with mottled grey coloured boxed, slipcase. The four volumes are in goo…d condition, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. All four books were First published by The Folio Society in 1958. Volume I: has 644 pages, Volume II: has 592 pages, Volume III: has 569 pages, Volume IV: has 537 pages. All pages intact in all four volumes, good tight bindings. All pages, text and lovely illustrations are in good, clean, readable order. Set, and bound in Great Britain by Richard Clay & Co. Ltd, Bungay, Suffolk, in Fournier 12 point type, one point leaded. A wonderful set of four volumes published by The Folio Society.

Bound in what is apparently full elephant hide paper (simulating vellum) decorated in gilt, metallic silver and red on the front boards with a clever design of the 'One Ring' encapsulating the 9 rings for mortal men su…rrounding the three concentric elvish rings surrounding 7 interlinked dwarvish rings. There are couple of very light pale tan (splash? ) marks on the spines, but not 100% sure they are marks as the paper is flecked like vellum anyway - they are pretty negligible and only really seen close to. Front and back covers immaculate. Illustrations are as the original 1977 Folio edition by Ingahlid Grathmer and drawn by Eric Fraser. The books feature a top edge dyed red and red metallic lettering to the spines. Housed in original gilt lettered crimson, paper covered, stiff card slipcase , which shows only very minor storage wear. No damage, VG corners. Internally FINE with No Inscriptions or marks. Overall this is a very bright, clean set of this iconic work. This set is overweight and will likely require extra postage depending on your location. Please check with seller if unsure.
