With the help of writer Elizabeth Shepherd, he tells how his people fish and farm just as they did when Columbus discovered the island in 1493. Drawings by Faustulus and his brother Mas Clem vividly convey the Caribs' way of life—the food they eat, the games they play, the ancient way of making the canoes that take them past the breakers to fish. Diagrams and directions are given for making the kind of "finger-catcher" that Carib children play with. With her husband and two young children, Elizabeth Shepherd stayed with Faustulus and his family on the Carib Reserve and had a unique opportunity to become acquainted with this small but sturdy group of people. An introductory section by Mrs. Shepherd gives the historical background and fascinating sociological context for this glimpse into the lives of a little-known and isolated people. XX FAUSTULUS JOSEPH FREDERICK lives with his mother and father, grandfather, and brothers on the Carib Reserve on the island of Dominica, where Elizabeth Shepherd visited him with her husband and two young children. Mrs. Shepherd, a graduate of Milton Academy and Bryn Mawr College, is a former elementary, junior high, and high school teacher. She has also been a writer and editor of scientific articles for a children's encyclopedia. Her interest in anthropology led to a meeting with Faustulus after she had seen his drawings and those of his brother, Mas Clem, which she feels have much to tell us about the daily life of a people almost untouched by modern technology. An enthusiastic amateur naturalist, Mrs. Shepherd is the author of Jellyfishes, in addition to her book about the Pygmies of the Congo, In a Pygmy Camp. XX NOTE: the history of Dominica's Carib Reserve is described in a Wikipedia entry titled Kalinago Territory. Frederick, Faustulus Joseph; Mas Clem Frederick (illustrator).
