paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Publication: London, Bloomsbury Publishing, 2005 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 608. Condition Report: Very Good. The binding remains firm and remarkably tight, exhibiting no signs of separation or vertical spine creasing, indicating the volume has been carefully handled and perhaps only lightly read. The photographic paper wrappers are bright and completely free of major chips or tears, though they do display faint, trivial edge-wear and slight rubbing to the corner tips consistent with standard shelving. Internally, the text block is commendably clean and square, with the pages remaining crisp and free from foxing or substantive blemishes, save for the aforementioned ink signature on the title page and a faint hint of age-toning to the extreme margins. The wrap-around 'SIGNED' bellyband is present and fully intact. Catalogue Note: The edition present is the 2005 Bloomsbury paperback, indicated by the publisher's number line sequence concluding in '3', identifying it as a third printing. The volume features internal maps adapted by Digby Atkinson from GÃ tz Bergander, alongside stark photographic wrappers illustrating the devastating USAAF air raids. Of particular significance is the bookâs provenance. The title page bears the ink signature of "Derek Jackson ex A/G 149 sqdn." Derek Jackson served as an Air Gunner with No. 149 Squadron, a heavy bomber unit of the Royal Air Force's Bomber Command. Most notably, Jackson is directly referenced within the text of this very volume (see pages 316-317), providing a poignant and immediate connection between the physical copy and the historical events it recounts. An independent wrap-around bellyband reading "SIGNED" is also present. While standard copies of this paperback printing are ubiquitous on the secondary market, association copies bearing the signature of a Bomber Command veteran explicitly cited within the author's research are decidedly scarce and hold distinct appeal for specialised military aviation collectors. Frederick Taylor's Dresden provides a definitive, harrowing, and meticulously researched account of one of the most controversial Allied bombing campaigns of the Second World War. On Tuesday, 13 February 1945, the historic city of Dresden was subjected to a devastating aerial assault by British and American forces, resulting in a terrifying firestorm that decimated the cultural centre and claimed the lives of tens of thousands. Drawing upon previously inaccessible East German archives and deeply moving eyewitness testimonies from survivors, military personnel, and refugees, Taylor untangles the complex myths surrounding the raid to present a balanced and profoundly human perspective on the tragedy. This compelling historical narrative not only reconstructs the tactical execution of the bombing but also interrogates the moral and strategic implications that continue to resonate to this day. GÃ tz Bergander, Digby Atkinson (illustrator).
