In particular, it gives us the story of a young man who wants desperately to be one of the guides of Chamonix in the Mont Blanc area. However, in the course of a rescue climb, he suffers a fall which causes him to lose his nerve. He sets out to regain it; his struggles form the theme of this tale.'' The author was himself a guide and a member of the famous Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix. This was his first successful novel.
