Trade Paperback. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. This copy is in very good plus unmarked condition, bright, white, tight and square, in illustrated card covers as issued. There is some evidence of damp to the bottom left hand corner of the pages but this does not affect either the text or the illustrations. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased charges will be quoted. Gilbert (born Dolomites, 1943) and George (born Devon, 1942) first met in 1967 at St Martin's School of Art, London, where they decided to work together and to make themselves, as artists 'alone in the world', the subject of their artwork. Despite this apparently simple aim, their art has a strong moral ambition. One of their earliest living sculpture presentations, Underneath The Arches 1969, addressed the life of the tramp, the homeless and the dispossessed. This concern for producing 'art for life's sake' is echoed in their belief that they are making an 'Art for All'. 'It's very important, when a person is standing in front of one of our pictures, that it is not an aesthetic composition, that it is not a picture that they decide whether they like or dislike. We say that art is a friendship between the viewer and the picture, a tunnel of thought. They are like visual love letters to the viewer. If you walk through the city you cannot remember one single person you pass, and you pass hundreds and they are all invisible. But if one person comes up and takes you by both hands and says "excuse me, I want to say something to you", you will remember that probably forever, depending on what he or she says.' Years later this vision remains and can be found in The Cosmological Pictures, created in 1989. A 'Cosmology' can be defined as the construction of the universe as an order whole-the means to find unity in diversity and contradiction-and the laws that govern theory. With this exhibition Gilbert & George stress the power of human thought to remake life and so create the future through a process of communication, discussion and questioning, stimulated by the pictures. The word 'cosmology' derives from the Greek words for 'world' and 'discourse'. Since September 1991, The Cosmological Pictures have been touring to 10 European cities - Krakow, Rome, Zurich, Vienna, Budapest, The Hague, Dublin, Barcelona, Liverpool and Stuttgart. Gilbert and George's aim to speak to many people in all of these cities is at the heart of their cosmology. Ref SS1. Gilbert & George (illustrator).…

Zustand: Very Good. Two hardcover volumes, 1200 pages. Gilbert & George are among the foremost artists of their generation. A collaborative team, they were early to explore performance as an art form, and early to explore the idea that every aspect of daily life could be classed as such. They were early to mingle photography and graphics in a style reminiscent of advertising, and early to address sexual identity in that work. In fact, they were early to do much that viewers now take for granted. Their work has been exhibited worldwide since the beginning of the 1970s, and is either unusually accessible or completely unpalatable, depending on the viewer?s mindset. It has attracted both fierce controversy and enormous acclaim, including the 1986 Turner Prize and the U.K.?s slot at the 2005 Venice Biennale. At last, on the fortieth anniversary of their meeting (September 25, 1967, Saint Martin?s, London) and on the eve of a major retrospective that will tour six venues around the world?including Tate Modern, the Brooklyn Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum and the de Young Museum in San Francisco?here is a book that does justice to the scale, depth and ambition of their artistic achievement. Or rather, here are two books: designed and produced by the artists, this luxurious two-volume hardback set, which comes in a customized carrying case with handles, documents every picture the pair has created over the course of their 35-year career. With details and installation views of many significant pieces, it includes 1500 color illustrations. The Complete Pictures will be the most thorough and extensive publication on the artists? work ever assembled. Copublished with Tate Publishing, London. Record # 362453.…
