The first covers the author's introduction as a young schoolboy to a small piece of wreckage in the Essex coastal marshes. His early inquisitiveness leads to identification of the aircraft type and several years later to a recovery operation which retrieves the substantial remains from their muddy resting places. The aircraft is finally put on display at the RAF Museum, Hendon. The second part of the book attempts to recreate the sequence of events during the raid which led to the aircraft's loss. It draws together as much of the story as possible using eye witness accounts from the ground and in the air, together with surviving documentary evidence.
