Lo storico dell'arte d'oggi e venuto infatti a trovarsi in una condizione di lavoro menu agevole di quella dello storico dell'arte antica, quanto all'indagine filologica e al reperimento delle fonti: perchà volendo avere una visione non confusa e non malcerta del Cubismo, mettiamo, o della Pittura Metafisica, ad evitare di servirsi di notizie di seconda mano col rischio di ripetere fatalmente gli stressi errori, egli dovrà affrontare personalmente la ricerca o e lo spoglio di un immenso materiale che va dalle collezioni di vecchi giornali agli opuscoli rari, dai cataloghi di mostre, che nessuno s'e dato la pena di conservare, alle lettere, agli appunti, ai disegni dispersi per tante mani e non mai pubblicati. Soltanto al termine di una cosa lunga e faticosa ricerca egli potrÃ, ordinando la congerie delle notizie, ricavarne il lineamento sicuro ed esauriente del movimento d'arte che abbia preso a oggetto dei propri studi ed allora, accanto a prospettive ignote a appena intuite che gli si apriranno dinanzi, altre ne vedrà attenuarsi o scomparire alla luce della indagine scientifica.
