Small patches of moisture damage to the edges of the upper board. Top fore-corners are bumped. All corners have light wear. Colour on the top edge of the text block is faded. Fore-edge if a bit soiled. Gift inscription dated 1929 on the front free endpaper. A couple of pages inside have tiny dog-eared corners. Otherwise, inside pages have occasional light soil but are clean overall. The dust jacket has very heavy edge wear, with paper loss, creases and tears. The panels are heavily soiled and the spine darkened from moisture damage. A children's story about a stolen horse. Illustrated in pen and ink.

In the late 1850's a plain and hearty British sailor returns to England with his wife?the daughter of an African king?and their baby. They establish themselves in a village pub. The sailor tends bar; the alien princess is his cheerful helpmate. The village reaction is to be expected for the times and results in tragedy. This book remains in print today. Signed by Author(s).

With engravings throughout the text in 'A Man in the Zoo' and with a frontispiece to 'The Sailor's Return'. In the original publisher's cloth bindings. Externally, very smart. There is some bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. There is some wear to the cloth in these areas. The spine labels are slightly faded.
