Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. 429 p. Includes: illustrations, index, bibliography. In English and Spanish. This book presents the first synthesis of scientific information about the remote and beautiful Isla del Coco National Park (Costa Rica). Primarily a field identification guide to the more commonly observed fishes in the nearshore waters, the book contains descriptions and color photographs of 150 of the 270 fish species know from Cocos. Descriptions include: the scientific name and common names; the diagnostic characteristics for distinguishing the fish in the field; size; the habitat where the species occurs, what it eats, notes on reproduction and sex; and interesting behavior; abundance; distribution; similar species and how to distinguish them; and other common names and scientific synonyms. The descriptions are preceded by an introduction to the island's natural history and are followed by complete species lists for the fish, coral, birds, marine mammals, terrestrial mammals, and reptiles, and a brief human history of the island.
