Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores political philosophy in 16th century France through the writings of Jean Vauquelin de la Fresnaye, a renowned poet, humanist, and political theorist. It examines his 1562 treatise on monarchy, which advocates for a strong, centralized monarchy as the best form of government for France. The author positions Vauquelin's ideas within the broader context of French political thought, particularly the influence of Italian political theorist Niccolà Machiavelli. The book delves into the thematic depth of Vauquelin's work, analyzing his arguments for a unified, divinely ordained monarchy as the guarantor of peace, justice, and prosperity. It highlights Vauquelin's emphasis on the importance of a wise and virtuous monarch, the dangers of political division, and the need for a strong and stable state to protect the nation from internal and external threats. The book concludes by discussing the significance of Vauquelin's insights on French political thought, emphasizing his enduring influence on the development of French political philosophy and his valuable contributions to our understanding of the complexities of monarchical rule.
