A sound, clean, very good copy in contemporary tree calf. Front outer joint showing a gentle partial crack, red morocco spine label with a chip affecting two letters on the left side, else a bright, handsome example. Early 20th century inscription to the front free endpaper. Light foxing to the large map, and the "Falls of the Ohio" map; slightly more to the Kentucky map. Contents otherwise distinctly fresh and bright. Very good. Hardcover. Second and best edition of Imlay's detailed description of the geography immediately west of the Appalachian Mountains. Filson's work on Kentucky is included here, with the first complete map of Kentucky. Initially published in 1784, that edition is impossibly scarce, and hardly ever found with the map. As such, the earliest reasonably attainable edition of Filson's foundational work on the Bluegrass State. The work also bears the first mention and description of Daniel Boone ("Boon"). Howes (I12) says it "gave the most complete information on the trans-Allegheny region available at the end of the 18th century." Uncommon in the trade, and genuinely scarce in a contemporary binding. On the spine, gilt tools of gaelic harps alternating with garlands in six panels. Illustrated with 3 folding maps and 2 charts. A little tanning and offsetting from the turn-ins; else fine in a modern binding. Gilbert Imlay (1754-1828, printed on the title-page as "George") began acquiring claims to land in Kentucky in 1783, but he overextended himself through speculation and fled in 1785. The first edition of his Topographical Description was published in 1784, and the present item has been revised and updated. This is the first edition to include John Filson's "Discovery, Settlement, and Present State of Kentucky," first published separately in 1784 and endorsed by the county's first settlers Daniel Boon, Levi Todd and James Harrod. Imlay is rather notorious for his affair with Mary Wollstonecraft.
