Near fine, head of spine leather loose. An excellent copy. 2 armorial book plates of Herbert Dickinson Turner and John Ponsonby. Peard (1829-1918), a lieutenant in the 20th Regiment of Foot, who had arrived at Evpatoriia on 14 September, was one of the first serving soldiers to publish an account of the war, after being invalided to Scutari on 12 December 1854 and returning soon afterwards to England" (Cross). He was an eyewitness to the Charge of the Light Brigade, and back in Scutari "heard great praises of Miss Nightingale. Her kindness and the attention of the nurses cheered the poor sufferers in the hospital, the condition of which greatly improved after their arrival" (pp. 237-8). Cross H57.
