Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The existence of the Russian Skazki or Marchen was first made generally known to the British Public some twenty years ago by Mr. W. R. S. Ralston in his Russian Folk Tales. That excellent and most engrossing volume was, primarily, a treatise on Slavonic Folk-Lore, illustrated with admirable skill an…d judgment, by stories, mainly selected from the vast collection of Afanasiev, who did for the Russian what Asbjornsen has done for the Norwegian Folk-Tale.A year after the appearance of Mr. Ralston's book, the eminent Russian historian and archaeologist, Peter Nikolaevich Polevoi (well known, too, as an able and ardent Shaksperian scholar), selected from the inexhaustible stores of Afanasiev some three dozen of the Skazki most suitable for children, and worked them up into a fairy tale book which was published at St. Petersburg in 1874, under the title of Narodnuiya Russkiya Skazki (Popular Russian Marchen). To manipulate these quaintly vigorous old-world stories for nursery purposes was, as may well be imagined, no easy task, but, on the whole, M. Polevoi did his work excellently well, and while softening the crudities and smoothing out the occasional roughness of these charming stories, neither injured their simple texture nor overlaid the original pattern. It is from the first Russian edition of M. Polevoi's book that the following selection has been made. With the single exception of 'Morozko,' a variant of which will be familiar to those who know Mr. Ralston's volume, none of these tales has seen the light in an English dress before; for though both Ralston and Polevoi drew, for the most part, from the same copious stock, their purposes were so different that their selections naturally proved to be different also. As to the merits of these Skazki, they must be left to speak for themselves. It is a significant fact, however, that all those scholars who are equally familiar with the Russian Skazki and the German Marchen, unhesitatingly give the palm, both for fun and fancy, to the former. R. N. B. (Author). Gere, C. M. (illustrator).

Soft cover periodical, single issue, in green-grey printed paper wraps, quarto, (7-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches), the cover with engraved decoration to front printed in black. Treglown, each preceded by a title sheet. Also, three partial page illustrations, two borders, 1 footer and 18 decorative initial caps. An index of the three issues comprising Vol. 2 appears as well. (Numbering is continuous from prior issue.) Thus: [2], [blank], [2], [blank], 95-144pp., [1], [blank], [1], [blank], [1], [blank], [5pp., vol. index and ads].**CONDITION: Very Good. Sound and clean, although with moderate folding which affects the margin of each page. Edges of the yapp-edged wraps have a few some minor (1/4 or less) tears and rumple, as seen. Very light browning at the spine. **Contents: British architect, preservationist, art historian and friend of William Morris, William Lethaby (1857-1931) provides an article entitled "Art, the Crafts, and the Function of Guilds." The onetime Surveyor for Westminster Abbey, Lethaby was responsible for the cleaning and preservation of the fabric of the building in the from 1906- 1928. Additionally, he was principal of London's Central School of Arts and Crafts, Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art and on the Committee for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings. Between 1894 and 1900 he had two building projects in Birmingham, which no doubt brought him into contact with the the work of the Guild. As an early friend of William Morris, he was also involved in the very early meetings of the Kelmscott Press, and later, as a defender of Morris's aims in the period after World War One when his work went somewhat out of favor. ( L. Parry, p. 21; Peterson, History, p. 290)** A portion of Robert Browning's 1852 narrative poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" is illustrated here by the English-born artist Inglis Sheldon Williams (1870-1940). The poem has been described as having moody, quest-like theme. Williams emigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada for a time, returning to London to study at the Slade School of Art, later traveling extensively and becoming an official war artist for the Canadians during the First World War. (Nat. Portrait Gallery) **A selection from William Caxton's "The Golden Legend," the Story of Seynt Kenelme, also appears in this issue. The text is presumably taken from William Morris and F.S. Ellis's three-volume Kelmscott edition of 1892, and there is certainly some fun to be had comparing the two sets of texts and noting the minor similarities and differences. However, the significant differences are found in the new illustrations and overall page design provided by the BGH artists, consisting of Meteyard's headpiece, the fancy initial capitals by H.A. Payne, as well as Tarling and Tregown's new full page illustrations of this story of the martyrdom of the ninth century King Kenelme, who was murdered by his sister Quyndrede and her lover Askeberd in an attempt to usurp power in the Welch Marches. Picturesque details of the tale provide ample fodder for the detail of these new drawings. (William Caxton, responsible for the printing of England's earliest books, had famously translated this book of saint's histories known as "The Golden Legend" from the original Latin version compiled by the medieval Bishop of Genoa, Jacobus de Voragine, published by Caxton in 1483.) Following this section are more items relating to the Kenelme story, including W.H. Bidlake's "A Note on Clent Church," and C.M. Gere's illustration of the same. [It is interesting to note that some of the art here was used in later editions of the "Golden Legend," cf. C.M. Gere's illustration in G.V. O'Neill's "The Golden Legend, Lives of the Saints" ( Cambridge, University Press, 1914.)] REFS: DNB, Linda Parry, edit. "William Morris," (New York," Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1996). pp. 21, 35, 79 etc. W. S. Peterson, Bibliography, A7, pp.19-24. Peterson, History, pp. 290-293. [Please see related Quest issue 5, our no. 9419. The two issues are also available as a set, details upon request--it was thought best to list separately in order to provide differentiated detail.] Scarce. Sydney Meteyard, C.M. Gere, Inglis Sheldon Williams, Oliver Brasket, H. A. Payne, G.T. Tarling and E. G. Treglown (illustrator). Book.

Numbering is consecutive with that of Quest Issue No. 4, see our listing 9417. **CONDITION: About Fine, with a some very, very minor crease to front of wraps, slight darkening to spine, and some slight offset browning to text, seen opposite plates. Now with tissue inserted. Overall, though, this is clean and has been well cared for. **This issue has decidedly medieval and architectural themes, marking it relevant in the Pre-Raphaelite and William Morris vein of promoting the past as a template for chivalric values, proper, handmade workmanship, and honoring the labor of the craftsperson. Hence, the article" Notes Upon Some of the Differences Between Ancient and Modern Buildings," by the architect and metalworker Arthur Stansfield Dixon (1856-1929), founder of the Birmingham School of Handicraft, and designer of their original premises. Other highlights include Edmund Hort New's wonderful full-page illustration of the medieval French castle at Fougerès. Located in Brittany, this holdfast was destroyed by Henry II in the twelfth century, and later rebuilt as a more durable fortification, sheltering artisans such as tanners, weavers, drapers and, later, glass works. *Following is a selection from the "King's Quair," the 15th-century poem written by the Scottish King James I (1394- 1437), and decorated with illustration by J. Southall and a border by Sydney Meteyard. [The ten-year old King James I sailed from North Berwick, via Bass Rock, in 1403, as his father, King Richard III attempted to keep him safe from the Stewarts. However, James was kidnapped at sea, imprisoned in the Tower of London and, later, Windsor Castle, by agents of the English King Henry IV, and not released until 1424.] The verses are from stanza 42-43 of James's poem, unfortunately "english-afied" from the original Scots. His captivity introduced him to the woman who would become his queen, and this is the section of the poem represented in these pages. (See, Skeat, "The Kingis Quair." (Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Son, 1884) pp. vii-ix. Watson 567. C.M. Gere, E.H. New, A.S. Dixon, Sydney Meteyard, H. Payne, F. W. Faux, J. Southall, G.T. Tarling, E.G. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very good +. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fair. First and Limited Edition. One of 500 copies, large quarto size, 60 pp. and 60 plates, with original dust jacket and prospectus. Ernest William Gimson (1864-1919) is know as one of the greatest of the English architect-designers. "Today his reputation is securel…y established as one of the most influential designers of the English Arts and Crafts movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries" (n.b., info and quote from Wiki). As with William Morris, Gimson believed in working with his hands and making things that fit their purpose with beauty, striving for a merger of the practical and the aesthetic. He obhorred things made by machine; doing one's work well, as best as one could, by hand, was the lodestar of his life. Morris and Gimson became friends, and Gimson designed a cottage for May Morris at Kelmscott. This work is a fitting tribute, with opening essays by his friends, two of whom provided line drawings to accompany the essays, and sixty collotype plates printed by Emery Walker. This particular volume has an interesting association, with the Ex-Libris of Rainforth Armitage Walker (1886-1960), based on a chapter heading illustration by Aubrey Beardsley in "Le Morte D'arthur". Per Mark Samuels Lasner, in "The Bookplates of Aubrey Beardsley" (p. 95), this Ex-Libris was not designed as an original bookplate by Beardsley (only three of these are known), but Walker had this Beardsley illustration printed as his Ex-Libris by Hugh Dent, the printer of "Le Morte D'arthur". Walker was a an early fan and collector of the works of Beardsley, and authored several books on the artist and his works. The subscriber list at the back of the book lists an "R.G. Walker" with an address in Bedford Park, with the "G." crossed out in pencil; Rainforth Armitage Walker did live in Bedford, so it is entirely possible the middle initial was a typo and it is, in fact, his name in the subscriber list. To add interest to this volume, we have the original prospectus (which, as of this writing, no other copies online have), and the dust jacket (see condition statement below), as well as both the Errata slip and the spare paper spine label (see description below). A prior owner (perhaps R.A. Walker?) pasted into the book two reviews: the first from The Times Literary Supplement dated 17 April, 1924 and the second from The London Mercury dated May, 1924. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter natural linen with paper spine label, fore- and bottom edges uncut, the Ex-Libris of R.A. Walker on the front pastedown, the title page with one of the eight in-text line drawings (see p. 9, "The Cottage at Sapperton: South Side"), the limitation statement on the verso of the title page, this copy no. 21 of 500, the Errata slip bound in between the limitation page and the Contents, the three essays followed by the section of collotype plates "made from drawings by Ernest Gimson and photographs of his completed work" (p. 35), following the plates is a "List of the Original Subscribers" which include, among many others, C.H. St J. Hornby, W.R. Lethaby, May Morris, B.H. Newdigate, A.R. Powys, and Emery Walker, tipped onto the rear pastedown is the spare spine label; Caslon type on Batchelor's Kelmscott Hand-made paper, large quarto size (the binding measures 12" by 8 3/4"), pagination: [i-iv] v-vii [1, blank] 1-46 [1, blank] [60 plates printed on rectos only], i-v (List of Subscribers). The prospectus consists of a single leaf (11 3/8" by 8 1/2"), on one side is a mirror of the title page with a short announcement above ("Ready in March.) and the other side with standard prospectus information including, at the bottom, a short section which could be used to order the book. The dust jacket is quite simple, the front panel with just the book's title and "Four guineas net" at the bottom, the spine again with just the book's title, and the back panel with the press device of the Shakespeare Head Press. ___CONDITION: Volume better than very good, the boards clean (although showing some offs.
