I suppose I became interested in art about ten years ago when I met Charles Saatchi at the Amanpuri Hotel in Thailand. I was sitting by the swimming pool and he was sitting with the film director David Puttnam. He asked me where I lived and I told him in Chester Square. "Well, introduce me to your husband because we need clever young people like him." So we became friends, but not within the art world. Johan was his "cleaner," as he called him, he'd clean up his mess and he cleaned up the Saatchi deal between the old and new companies. I really appreciated Charles's help recently as he assisted me with my photographic shows of nudes. The last one he came to he said, "Oh, definitely, definitely commercial, stick to 1930s Paris." I had been working with Martin Maloney and doing some colour photographs, and Martin said, "Keep on with them." Charles said, "If you keep on with them you'd better go into magazines." So I went to New York and took my book round and I got a call back from Visionaire. I then telephoned Katy Barker who was the only photographic agent I knew and asked her advice. She told me that I couldn't show nudes and that I should do some fashion photographs. So I was introduced to a girl named Rushka Bergman who helped me take the correct photographs for my book. I showed them to the photographer Michel Comte, who took me to Italian Vogue. I then did one or two jobs for Franca, including the Kartell Catalogue, which many photographers did. It showed artists in their chairs. She liked the pictures and suggested I do a book on artists in their studios. I asked for a writer, and Martin suggested Gemma de Cruz, and we drew up a list together. Au XVIIe siècle et XVIIIe siècle, les populations des montagnes savoyardes font souvent preuve d une extraordinaire mobilité géographique et professionnelle, afin d améliorer leurs dures conditions d existence. Ces remues d hommes entraînent chaque année des milliers de paysans hors de leurs paroisses, vers des contrées parfois éloignées, où ils vont exercer durant quelques mois une activité sans rapport avec le travail de la terre. Dans ce flot migratoire, on peut discerner des spécialisations régionales comme les maçons du Giffre, les hommes de peine et gagne-deniers du Haut Val d Arly, les ramoneurs de Tarentaise et de Maurienne, les aiguiseurs et rémouleurs du Chablais, ou encore les colporteurs, chaudronniers et merciers du Faucigny. De tous ces types de migration : artisanal, prolétarien ou marchand, c est certainement cette dernière catégorie qui a suscité le plus de curiosité parmi les historiens, aussi bien en Savoie que dans d autres régions alpines comme l Oisans ou le Val-d Aoste. Les causes de l émigration sont multiples. On a évoqué la pauvreté, endémique, durant des siècles, dans une population essentiellement paysanne et montagnarde, jusqu à ce que la Savoie entre, à partir des années 1880, dans la modernité économique qui rend l expatriation de moins en moins indispensable. La cause majeure de l émigration était, cependant, dans les montagnes, le chômage climatique dû à la saison d hiver. Pour diminuer le nombre des bouches à nourrir, les hommes allaient chercher du travail au-dehors. Laissant au village les femmes, les enfants et les vieillards, ils partaient aux premières neiges et s en revenaient, au printemps, pour les travaux des champs et l inalpage du bétail.
