È una raccolta, unica nel suo genere, di ventisei racconti (la gran parte pubblicati sulle pagine del quotidiano napoletano, più alcuni inediti), tratti dai documenti dell'Archivio storico del Banco di Napoli, nell ambito del progetto di valorizzazione messo in campo da Il Cartastorie. Una mole enorme di documenti conservati nel più grande archivio bancario del mondo che, grazie al lavoro di ricerca del direttore Eduardo Nappi, e alla penna di alcune importanti firme della letteratura e del giornalismo, escono con i loro segreti custoditi da secoli nelle carte impolverate per farsi vita, narrazione, sentimento. La storia di Napoli e del popolo napoletano, con i suoi eventi, i suoi luoghi, e i suoi personaggi più o meno noti, si dispiega così davanti agli occhi dei lettori, come una sorta di lanterna magica vivida e colorata, coniugando appunto l'utile della conoscenza, il vero dell'argomento e l'interessante della narrazione. È, in fin dei conti, una rievocazione di fantasmi, di «questi fantasmi» incarnati nel destino di una città che non ha mai smesso di tessere la sua infinita tela di racconti. Dalla terribile peste del Seicento alle eruzioni del Vesuvio; dalla rivoluzione partenopea del 1799 alla devozione per San Gennaro; dal Cimitero delle 366 fosse all'imponente Albergo dei Poveri, detto «Il Serraglio», voluto da Carlo di Borbone, fino all'Ospedale degli Incurabili (uno dei più importanti luoghi dell'arte sanitaria a Napoli, che nei documenti d'archivio schiude i segreti delle infinite storie dei suoi pazienti, svelando i loro nomi e i loro mali); e ancora: dal soggiorno napoletano di Caravaggio (con le sue Sette Opere di Misericordia e la mai ritrovata Pala Radovolich) al «delitto d'onore» di Maria d'Avalos e Fabrizio Carafa per mano del principe madrigalista Carlo Gesualdo; dalla parabola di Angelo Carasale, ex maniscalco divenuto celebre impresario teatrale e direttore dei lavori del San Carlo (poi finito miseramente in prigione), ai misteri alchemici del principe di Sansevero Raimondo di Sangro; dalla bottega del pittore François de Nomé, detto Monsù Desiderio, fino alla rivolta di Masaniello, è davvero straordinario come la Storia riesca a declinarsi in questi racconti al plurale, a farsi «storie» (perché, come scriveva Peter Bichsel, è proprio in questo che consiste la differenza tra il narratore e lo storico: nel credere alla possibilità di mettere al plurale la Storia), trasformandosi in conoscenza filtrata dalle emozioni di uomini e donne così lontani da noi, eppure allo stesso tempo così vicini.
