This is No. XXIV in The Publications of the Champlain Society series. Edited with an Introduction and Notes by G. P. de T. Glazebrook. This volume contains the transcriptions of a collection of letters, excluding a few, that were all addressed to James Hargrave (1798-1865), an Anglo-Canadian fur trader who worked for the North West Company (NWC) and Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Hargrave became a chief trader of HBC in1833, and later, in 1844, a chief factor with the company. Hargrave's life was concurrent with nearly the entire span of HBC from its merger with NWC in 1821 to the cession of its territory to the Canadian government. Hargrave passed just before HBC's territory was ceded to Canada. The following are most the authors of the letters in this volume: J. G. McTavish, John Siveright, Francis Heron, Duncan Finlayson, William Connelly, Cuthbert Cumming, Edward Smith, Allan McDonnell, Thomas McMurray, John Stuart, James McMillan, Alexander Ross, Charles Ross, Richard Rae, Donald McKenzie, Thomas Simpson, George T. Allan, J. L. Lewes, J. D. Cameron, William Cockran, John Rowand, William Mactavish, Dugald Mactavish, John Charles, Alexander Christie, Robert Wilson, Francis Butcher, W. G. Rae, John Bell, John Tod, James Douglas, Richard Grant, John Isbister, Nicol Finlayson, J. E. Harriott, Murdock McPherson, Archibald McDonald, Archibald McKinlay, George Keith, Angus Cameron, and R. F. Harding. As noted in the Introduction, the letters offer a glimpse of the inner workings of HBC and the fur trading industry and what life was like on the Canadian frontier during the nineteenth century. The Introduction also says of the letters herein, "All the writers used--or attempted to use--the polite usage and formalized phraseology of the day. Written often in remote and crude posts, or on strenuous voyages, the letters yet reflect the manners of the time. They combine, as a man's thoughts combine, work with other interests. From the state of trade they turn to thoughts on English or Canadian politics; from the needs of the post to reading; from the correct size of kettles to the state of their health. One can see in what kinds of houses they lived, what they ate, what they read, how they dressed, what they thought of each other."
