French translation from the 1st edition in Latin, Occulta Naturae Miracula, published 1559. 12mo, collated as, Title page with woodcut of viking ship, pp2, pp213 plus 30 pages of alphabetical index to rear. Hardcover issued without dust jacket. Slightly later rebind of full leather with 5 raised bands and leather title label to spine and half of the "Gen de Paris" stamp to front cover. Binding in good condition with some rubbing to all edges and boards and a little chipping to top of back board. Inside, except for the very odd mark, all pages with all edges dyed red, in excellent clean and bright condition with no foxing, waterstains, fingermarks etc. . For added interest the bookplate of Baron Hyacinthi Theodori, dean of the Faculté de médecine de Paris circa 1720s is pasted to front pastedown. Levinus Lemnius was a celebrated Dutch physician, whose medical writings were much translated. He studied under the famous Swiss botanist and bibliographer Konrad Gesner at the University of Louvain and under the famous Flemish anatomist Andreas Vesalius at the University of Padua. This Renaissance treatise on natural philosophy and medicine draws on classical sources, particularly Aristotle with Lemnius being influenced by the "airs, waters, places" doctrine from the Hippocratic Corpus. This important work includes explanations of demonology, somnambulism, and the physical causes of mental illness, the properties and healing virtues of herbs and gemstones, alongside oddities like hermaphrodites. An superb copy of a very scarce early work with an interesting provenance.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. A rare, late 16th century edition of Lemnius's Occult Marvels and Secrets of Nature, with Several Teachings on Various Things, Both by Probable Reason and by Artificial Conjecture. This is the French translation by Jacques de Gohory, after the original 1559 Latin imprint. An early edition of this famous book of secrets, Lemnius collects a tremendous selection of various medical problems and seeks out cures, through both medical and natural lore. Sources and information are drawn from ancient Greek, Hebrew, Arab, and Latin sources, presented and commented on in a rather haphazard fashion. Among some of the topics touched upon are those on somnambulists, diseases caused by demons, the virtue of gems or herbs, hermaphrodites, and much more. The work was immediately popularized and spread throughout the region, seeing numerous reprints over the decades, with an English edition being printed in the mid 17th century. A learned student under Dodoens, Gessner, and Vesalius, Lemnius was a well-trained Dutch physician after 40 years of practicing his work, and remained pragmatic at the core, relying on conventional medicine and treatments instead of any astronomical or occult practices. The title page is lacking, with an early (likely 17th century) handwritten copy added. Leave 168 is also lacking, replaced by a photocopy tipped in, though it appears to be one from a different edition. USTC records 22 existing copies of this edition in libraries. One finely bound volume in 12mo, 210 of 212+(20) leaves This volume is in very good shape, with minimal rubbing and wear to the binding. There is some wear to the first and last handful of leaves, with some foxing and staining throughout, again, heavier to the first and last handful of leaves. There are a few, tiny, marginal restorations.

Zustand: Very Good. A Very Good Book in an Attractive 19th Century Mottled Calf Binding. Bottom corner of front board, bumped and worn. Front joint starting with a two inch split near crown. Likewise a small loss to binding near tail of verso. Red stain to all edges of text block remains vibrant. Marbled Endpapers. Longis woodcut device. Title page had a small loss above title that has been repaired. Marking below date on title page. Leaves 163-173 have faint staining along top edge. A small stain to leaf 234.[220 Incorrectly Numbered 221 & 227 Incorrectly Numbered 177]. Several and various minor instances of underling as annotation. Binding is tight and square. Hardcover. Octavo. [xxiv], 277 Paginated Leaves, [554pp.] + [1 with Woodcut of Machiavelli]. Remarkably clean and fresh. Though somewhat nebulously titled, this is a French edition of Machiavelli's Discourses On the First Decade of Titus Livy. The first appearance of any portion of Discourses on Livy in French was published in 1544 though only the first book. Gohory's complete translation [3 books] was published in 1548. The 1559 edition [presented here] represents the second complete edition of the work in translation [Bowen]. OCLC has 9 copies across 3 title page device variants. No other copies in commerce. . Along with The Prince, The Discourses on the First Decade of Livy established Machiavelli as one of the most important, foundational, and revolutionary minds in the history of political philosophy. The Discourses hold vital importance in helping to clarify and contextualize Machiavelli as a republican and not, as so many have assumed from a misreading of The Prince, a sychophant to and advocate for tyrants. The translation of this work into French marks a milestone in its influence upon philosophers like Diderot and Voltaire, the West, and the World. 19th Century Mottled Calf, Gilt Detailing Third French Edition [Second Complete French Edition].

Only one other copy of the Latin edition recorded on the market, the Wittock copy, with an interesting Renaissance binding, with 7 plates missing replaced in the 20th century by plates from a later edition and two plates with captions from the later edition, sold for 89250 pounds at Christie's London on June 7, 2004, 17 years ago. Precious and remarkable first issue before caption and numbering of the majority of the plates; the copy, close to Harvard College No. 519, having like this one 8 second issue plates with numbering but before captions: 13-18; 21 and 26. « Title-page without ornamentation. The volume consists of four preliminary leaves and twenty-six engraved plates of the story of Jason and Medea, approximately 63/16 x 9". The first is unsigned, the others are signed with the monogram "RB" of René Boyvin, and the last is signed in addition to the monogram, « Leonardus thiri. inu?. Renatus. .F » « In his dedication to Charles IX in French issue. Leonard Thiry worked at Fontainebleau under Rosso and Primaticcio from 1536 to about 1542 (The Jason plates were attributed to both these masters when issued by later publishers.) Each scene measures about 3 3/8 x 5", while the remainder of the copperplate comprises an elaborate border displaying a fantastic assortment of figures, putti, grotesques, birds, animals, and cartouches containing small scenes. It is this wealth of invention in the borders, sometimes eclipsing the scenes themselves, that makes this a major work in the Fontainebleau tradition. For a study of the Jason series, and the extent to which Mauregard's plan of providing an artist's model book was realized, see J.-J. Marquet de Vasselot, "La conquête de la toison d'or et les émailleurs limousins du XVIe siècle," La revue de l'art ancien et moderne, vol. 34 (July-December 1913), p. [241], 253, [333}-345, reproductions. See also, Levron, Boyvin, p. 29-[34], P. 66-67, nos. 16-41, full series reprod. plates XIX-XLIV. Boyvin is one of the most influential figures in the early history of engraving in France. Robert Dumesnil (vol. 8, p. 36-44, n° 36-44) describes the copperplates in three states: first unnumbered, second with small numbers added at the top of the plate, and third - a much later impression - with the numbers removed. This copy contains a mixed set, the majority in the first state, but plates 13-18, 21 & 26 in the second, with the numbers. The fine, dark impression in this copy are particularly effective for the night scenes of n° 14, 18, and 23. The preliminary leaves are printed in roman and italic letter with three excellent grotesque initials. Mauregard's dedication is dated July 3rd and the privilege, July 14th of 1563. (Harvard, French Sixteenth, n°519). One of the most precious and rare suites of the school of Fontainebleau, engraved on copper by René Boyvin from drawings by Léonard Thiry, one of the first painters called to Fo.

Small woodcut ornament on title, woodcut initials and headpieces, eighteenth century engraved armorial bookplate on pastedown ('Le Camus' according to pencil note on fly). Light age yellowing, first few leaves strengthened on verso at blank outer margin, small stain in lower margin of quire b, outer margins of last few leaves a little chipped. A very good copy in early calf, covers bordered with a double gilt rule, arms of Charles Le Bascle, Marquis d'Argenteuil gilt stamped on covers, spine with gilt ruled raised bands, double gilt ruled in compartments with crowned 'Dauphin' gilt at centres, all edges marbled, joints and headband neatly restored. Rare provincial edition of this romance of chivalry, charmingly bound with the royal emblem of the crowned 'Dauphin' on the spine and the arms of Charles Le Bascle, Marquis d'Argenteuil on the covers. Although the dolphin gilt stamp does not itself denote the provenance of the French heir apparent, the crowned dolphin carries a stronger inference of Royal ownership. The work is a continuation of the original Amadis story; Jacques Gohorry made this translation and adaption from the 12th book of Amadis written by Silves de la Selva first published in Spanish at Seville in 1549. The stories of Amadis were immensely popular in C16th France; Pettegree records seven editions for the year 1576 alone of the various books of Amadis. "Amadís of Gaul, is a prose romance of chivalry, possibly Portuguese in origin. The first known version of this work, dating from 1508, was written in Spanish by Garci Ordóñez de Montalvo, who claimed to have "corrected and emended" corrupt originals. Internal evidence suggests that the Amadís had been in circulation since the early 14th century or even the late 13th. In Montalvo's version, Amadís was the most handsome, upright, and valiant of knights. The story of his incredible feats of arms, in which he is never defeated, was interwoven with that of his love for Oriana, daughter of Lisuarte, king of England; she was his constant inspiration, and eventually he won her in marriage. Many characters in the Amadís were based on figures from Celtic romance, and the work was, indeed, Arthurian in spirit. It differed, however, from the Arthurian cycle in numerous important respects. There was no particular sense of place or time, only a vague unspecified field for the interplay of idealized human relationships. Whereas earlier romance had reflected a feudal society, the Amadís invested the monarchy with an authority that heralds the advent of absolutism. Amadís himself was more idealized and therefore less human than such earlier heroes as Lancelot and Tristan. He was also far more chaste: French romance had already put a courtly veneer over the disruptive eroticism of the Celtic tales, but, with the Amadís, medieval chivalry achieved complete respectability. The work and its exaltation of new standards of knightly conduct caught the imagination of polite society all over Europe. In France, especially, it became the textbook of chivalresque deportment and epistolary style. Throughout the 16th century, numerous sequels and feeble imitations appeared, the fashion being given its deathblow by parody early in the 17th century in Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote (though Cervantes held the original in high esteem)." Enc. Brit. A charming copy with excellent provenance. USTC 23437. Pettegree, 'French Vernacular Books' 1001. Baudrier. I pp. 362-363. Index Aureliensis 104426.
