Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. 5th or later Edition. VG/NO DJ, HB, 16mo., 340 pgs. The title continues: "Illustrative of Their Natures, Dispositions, Manners, etc., Interspersed with Numerous Interesting Characteristic Anecdotes. Abridged from Dr. Goldsmith's Natural History, by J. Macloc, Esq. Embellished with nearly four hundred elegant engravings on woodcut by Mr. J. Thompson, from the designs of the most approved naturalists. The Fifth Edition, considerably enlarged." Frontispiece is a copper plate engraving of a menagerie of 27 animals in the forest. The woodcuts by Thompson are vignetted within the text and are charmingly and naively rendered. This volume rebound in a utilitarian maroon leatherette with Morocco grain and a black leather spine label with gilt title and date. Can be easily removed for a more authentic rebind but serves well for now to make the volume easily useable. There are one or two woodcuts to each page of the volume.
