The Complete Works of Primo Levi, presented in a magnificent, three-volume Slipcased Edition, in definitive new translations. "Gathers all fourteen of Primo Levi's books, memoirs, essays, poetry, commentary, and fiction. Primo Levi, the Italian-born chemist once described by Philip Roth as that 'quicksilver little woodland creature enlivened by the forest's most astute intelligence', has largely been considered a heroic figure in the annals of twentieth-century literature for 'If This Is A Man', his haunting account of Auschwitz. Yet Levi's body of work extends considerably beyond his experience as a survivor. Now, the transformation of Levi from Holocaust memoirist to one of the twentieth century's greatest writers culminates in this publication" (Publisher's blurb). Thirteen of the books are all-new translations by the indefatigable and legendary Ann Goldstein. The fourteenth title is extensively revised by its original translator. The late great Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison contributes an Introductory Essay. "Old School publishing on a grand scale. A magnificent edition of an important author. For such a gift as 'The Complete Works of Primo Levi', one should probably do little more than express thanks. Whether as witness or imaginative artist, Levi stands high among the truly essential European writers of the past century" (The New Yorker). "A triumph of human identity and worth over the pathology of human destruction" (Toni Morrison). An absolute "must-have" title for Primo Levi collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Slipcased Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, partly because of the publisher's shoddy packaging. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce set thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 0871404567. no. …
