Written by the Rev. William Archer Rutherfoord Goodwin (1869-1939), twice rector of Bruton Parish and known as the father of the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, the man who in 1924 enlisted John D. Rockefeller Jr. to fund the restoration of the colonial town. A few weeks before his death Goodwin asked his cousin Mary Frances Goodwin to revise and combine his two earlier histories, "Bruton Church Historical Notes" (1903) and "Bruton Church Restored" (1907), into this single volume, published posthumously in 1941 and dedicated to his memory. The book traces the parish from the settlement of Jamestown through the colonial period, the Revolution, and the restorations of 1905 and 1907, and prints a wealth of primary material, including the old vestry book, parish registers, tombstone and mural tablet inscriptions, and a record of persons who had enslaved people baptized between 1746 and 1797, making it an important source for Virginia church history and genealogy.Contents: The Settlement of Jamestown; Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, Virginia; The Induction of Ministers; The Old Regime; The Church after the Revolution, and the Restoration of 1905; Three Sermons; Bruton's Priceless Possessions; Tombstones and Mural Tablets in the Church; The Churchyard; The Old Vestry Book; Records from the Old Parish Registers; Bruton Parish Church Today; Index.…
