Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. We rarely list a book simply because it's beautiful, but this one deserves it. Hardcover, full leather in perfect late Victorian decorative binding, with brown goatskin, raised cords with elaborately decorated panels, gold borders on the spine. The date 1905 at the bottom of the spine. Page edges heavily gilt. Rolled gold decorations on the insides of the boards. The binding style is not unique or innovative, but it's unusual in that it's in perfect condition. Dark blue endpapers. 1158 pages. Text block perfectly tight. Excellent condition overall, with no evidence of strain at the hinges or in the gutters, no scratches on the gilt foreedges. It was almost certainly an exquisite gift in 1905 and it could be again. A standard desk reference for more than 100 years. The handwritten calling card of M and Mrs Henry Phipps is tucked inside.
