London 1883. xiv,306 p. orcl.

Cloth, gilt cover-title and device, large 4to, 44 cm, [3], 38, [2] pp,7 full-page engravings, 13 woodcuts. . Uncommon. Includes a Memoir of the artist and illustrator Cecil Gordon Lawson (1849-1882) by Sir Edmund Gosse and, in an appendix, a Catalogue of pictures exhibited by Cecil Lawson at the Royal Academy and at the Grosvenor Gallery. The illustrations comprise 3 etchings (2 by Herkomer, 1 by Whistler), 1 steel engraving by Herkomer, 3 facsimile reproductions of Lawson's works and 13 woodcuts of sketches drawn on wood by Lawson. The woodcuts and Whistler etching are printed on india paper and mounted. The other etchings are printed directly onto the page. From a contemporary review by Cosmo Monkhouse: ". the volume is a rare instance of how a young genius can be appreciated and his memory cherished by his peers both in his own art and the sister art of literature. Although the wood-cuts are unequal, some are very good, and others are the only records available of the arduous labour which Lawson for a few years undertook for the illustration of current literature. Of Mr. Whistler's etching the same may be said as of all his work, that it is "as good as far as it goes." It is characteristic that he should have chosen an unfinished picture for interpretation, and that this interpretation should be as "terse" as possible. His little slight etching is nevertheless a taste, and a piquant taste, of "his quality." To those who wish to see the very hand of Lawson himself, the most satisfactory plate in the volume is a facsimile of the beautiful crayon drawing of "The Maid was in the Garden. An ex-library copy with a few small blindstamps on lower margins and some accession marks, Covers darkened and finger-marked and slightly rubbed, endpapers agetoned, contents Good with a few minor marks.…
