Warnsinck. -- Nicolaas de Graaff (baptized in Alkmaar, 18 August 1619 - Egmond aan Zee, 1688) was a surgeon, travel writer, and draftsman. The son of a sailor, he joined the Dutch Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) in 1639, where he represented the Chamber in Hoorn, and made a total of sixteen voyages around the world. He wrote a humorous account that was published posthumously in 1701 as "Reisen van Nicolaus de Graaff na de vier gedeeltens des werelds, als Asia, Africa, America, en Europa", together with the Oost-Indische Spiegel. Both of these are included in this Linschoten volume. The Oost-Indische Spiegel gives a very sharp, and far from laudatory, description of the life and customs of the Dutch in the East Indies, in which he satirizes women, the plunder trade, and Rijkloff van Goens Jr., who died en route. Once back in the Netherlands, he became sheriff and mayor of Egmond aan Zee. - Text in Dutch.
