Hans Schack Knuth und Patientin G.s. 1843-48 Medizinstud. an der Univ. Berlin, 1848-51 Weiterbildung in Prag, Paris, Wien und London. G. gilt als der hauptsächl. Begründer der modernen wissenschaftl. Augenheilkunde, ab 1850 als selbstständiger Arzt mit eigener Klinik und Poliklinik, ab 1866 als Ordinarius an der Univ. Berlin. Als Lehrer Johann Friedrich Horners gab G. den Anstoss zur Entwicklung der Ophthalmologie (Augenheilkunde) in der Schweiz. Mit dem 1850 von Hermann Helmholtz erfundenen Augenspiegel schuf er die Diagnostik der Augenkrankheiten des Augenhintergrundes (Aderhaut, Netzhaut, Sehnerv). Vielseitiger Operateur. Seine Iridektomie (Ausschneidung der Regenbogenhaut) beim akuten Glaukom (grüner Star) war die erste wirksame Behandlungsmethode bei diesem Leiden. 1859-69 kam G. regelmässig im September zur Erholung ins ausserrhod. Heiden und operierte hier Augenkranke aus aller Welt; das Hotel Freihof verwandelte sich während seiner Anwesenheit in eine Augenklinik. G. trug entscheidend zum Aufschwung Heidens als Kurort bei.
