Lieber (1886â"1986) was a Russian-born American mathematician, writer, and educator known for her engaging and accessible explanations of advanced mathematical concepts. She earned her PhD in mathematics from Clark University and later became the head of the mathematics department at Long Island University. Through her books, often illustrated by her husband Hugh Lieber, she aimed to make abstract mathematical ideasâ"such as Einsteinâs relativity, topology, and higher-dimensional geometryâ"understandable to a general audience. Her works, written in a unique free-verse style, often explored the philosophical and ethical implications of mathematics, emphasizing creativity, freedom, and human progress. Hugh Lieber (1888â"1961) was an artist, illustrator, and art professor, best known for his collaborations with his wife, Lilian Lieber. A skilled draftsman, he provided whimsical, expressive illustrations that complemented Lilianâs mathematical writings, helping to visualise complex concepts in an engaging and accessible manner. He taught at Long Island University and had a background in fine arts, bringing a playful and humanistic touch to mathematical ideas. His drawings added a unique charm to Lilianâs books, reinforcing their mission of making mathematics both enjoyable and meaningful.

Endpapers of book by Daniel Buren. "Since public museums came into being in the late 18th century, artists have looked upon them with a mixture of reverence, complicity, suspicion, and disdain. In The Museum as Muse, artists of many persuasions speak their minds about museums, their functions and spaces, their practices and politics, and their relationship to the art they contain. More than 60 artists are represented by a wide range of works: photographs of museum patrons by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliot Erwitt; 'personal museums' and 'cabinets of curiosities' by Charles Wilson Peale, Marcel Duchamp, and Claes Oldenburg; fantasies of the destruction or transformation of museums by Hubert Robert, Ed Ruscha, and Christo and more, including works created especially for this project by contemporary artists, and an anthology of statements and writings by artists about museums. This volume was published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including a 6 mm. tear to spine edge and bumping of upper edge of recto. Light yellowing of page edges. Contents otherwise clean and unmarked.
