Modern half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, the spine with raised bands, leather label First edition of this account of a British exploring expedition whose goal was to explore the interior of Africa starting on the western coast with the goal of locating the source of the Niger River. The text describes the local scenery and populace, and the plates show native costumes, villages, local flora; one plate shows eight musical instruments. Another black label on the spine with publication date 1825. Leather and marbled paper are in good shape, still attractive, but not glossy and perfect. 2 bookplates on endpapers -- on the attached endpaper, "Benj. Hynam" with coat of arms including a dark skinned man. On free endpaper, "Edith de Long" with image of lion and elephants at African watering hole (dated 1930). 413 pages. Pages clean and square, without foxing or stains. All 10 (aquatint) plates present, plus the 4 (lithographed) botanical plates at the back & the folding map. All are in very good condition.
