HARVEST OF THE LOWLANDS is the first collection on a serious and ambitious scale which enables the English-reading world to enjoy the prose art of a people closely connected with ours in history. The selections represent the work of writers from 1880 to the present day and are given added significance by a critical- historical survey of Dutch literature as a whole. This Introduction is extremely valuable for the wealth and succinctness of its material and for its interpretative point of view which provides a key to the prolific energy of Dutch writers during the past half-century.'
