All photos somewhat warped, some minor creasing in corners. Having built the Apollo lunar module, Grumman entered the competition to design and build the space shuttle, but lost…to Rockwell International. The Grumman space shuttle shown here is in line with the basic concept discussed at the time, which was a smaller winged orbiter mounted on a larger winged booster. It is worth noting that the Grumman booster uses the delta-wing configuration that would later be adopted in the final space shuttle design, while many of Rockwell?s concepts at the time still had the original straight-wing configuration that eventually was abandoned. This was due to the fact that such a configuration would not allow the shuttle to withstand the stresses of reentry into the atmosphere. Worth noting is also the vertical delta wings on Grumman?s orbiter. A similar wing configuration had earlier been employed on the Martin Marietta X-24 experimental aircraft - used to try out the concept of unpowered reentry and landing - in the late 1960s.
