Both groups rejected prewar conventions, deeply influencing later conceptual and performance art. Yayoi KUSAMA shared their avant-garde visions and took part in many of their exhibitions. GUTAI Art Association (Japan) was founded in 1954 in the Osaka-Kobe region by Jirō Yoshihara, Gutai was an influential collective of Japanese artists known for experimental, action-based works. Artists were instructed to "never imitate others" and to allow the human spirit and raw physical materials to "shake hands" without dominating one another. Famous for interactive, large-scale installations, live performances, and unconventional methods, such as painting with feet or launching paint from cannons.
