"INTRODUCTION - `I, Arthur Close Bo…rton, finding that my memory is not becoming more retentive as the years pass away, have decided to record the more important events of the war as far as they affect the members of the family individually. This will be of assistance to me personally, and may be of interest to the family hereafter.' Thus the hopeful preamble to the Diary of the Fancily of Borton during the Great Isar, 1914-1918. Nine large hand-written volumes later the old man brought his Herculean task to an end. One can imagine him screwing the top on to his fountain pen and leaning back in his chair, basking in the thought of future generations of Bortons thumbing gratefully through his labour of love. Alas, for the truth. What family interest there was turned out to be pathetically short-lived. When Arthur Borton's younger son died in 1969 the discovery of the diaries amongst his papers came as a complete surprise. The old man's reward for his prodigious efforts would seem to have been nearly half a century of neglect. Whatever the reasons for the family's apparent disinterest-and a kind of modesty may well be one of them-I can only say that from the time I cautiously eased my way into Volume I (4 August 1914-10 July 1915) until I finally reached 1919 and Volume 9, I was an addict. Here, for the first time in my experience, was not just a vivid account of the gothic horrors and the camaraderie of war itself, but a much wider piece of social history, a beautifully unforced picture of the upper middle class, of Rupert Brooke's England. Theoretically of course, as a member of the family, I'm hopelessly biased. In fact I'm only related by marriage. The diarist's son, Biffy, was my step-grandfather. And much as I loved him personally, I feel no strong sense of family identity, nor the slightest desire merely to perpetuate the name of Borton." Size: 8vo.
