Muckermann in which he argues that animals lack intelligence and only think and act based on instinct. The following statements toward the end of the thesis summarize its central argument: "Animals, then, do not possess intelligence in its genuine meaning. They are mere sense-beings." The following are the titles of the chapters: "The Humanizing of the Brute," "Instinct and Final Tendency," "Instinct and Consciousness of Finality," "Instinct and Sensuous Cognition," "Instinct and Sense-Experience," "Instinct and Intelligence," "The 'Intelligence' of 'The Lower Animals,'" and "The 'Intelligence of 'The Higher Animals.'" Hermann Muckermann (1877-1962) was a German Jesuit priest, anthropologist, and proponent of "racial hygiene," which…he nominally rejected upon Pope Pius XI's condemnation of eugenics. Muckermann nonetheless continued to teach eugenics in Germany and embraced Nazi ideology concerning racial purity. In this book, he condemns certain aspects of Darwinism but concedes that the theory of evolution is compatible with Christian faith.
