Under senare år har intresset för Hallwylska museet stegrats och därmed också för den person som med järnvilja, outtröttlighet och förmögenhet lyckades förverkliga sin idé att till eftervärlden i detalj bevara ett hem från sekelskiftet. För första gången skildras här hennes liv - hennes uppväxttid i Stockholm, giftermålet med Walter von Hallwyl, riksgreven från Schweiz, insamlandet av föremålen och planeringen av det tilltänkta museet, det dagliga livets rutiner men också familjeliv och fester. Wilhelmina von Hallwyl (1844-1930) var dotter till Wilhelm Kempe, skapare och ägare av Ljusne-Woxna bruk. Som barn plockade Wilhelmina snäckor och hemförde minnen från de första utlandsresorna. Hon fortsatte sitt samlande och blev tidigt medveten om syftet: att till framtiden rädda föremål och uppgifter från sin egen tid. I sinom tid gav hon arkitekten på modet, Isak Gustaf Clason, uppdrag att rita palatset vid Hamngatan som stod färdigt 1898. Wilhelmina och Walter von Hallwyl testamenterade sitt hem till svenska staten och 1938 öppnades det för allmänheten som museum. Hallwylska museet ger en unik inblick i ett högreståndshem från sekelskiftet med samlingar som rymmer inte bara utomordentliga målningar och andra konstföremål utan också de vardagligaste ting från tiden som inte bevarats på andra håll.
