Although no individual artist was as accomplished as the great French masters, a tradition of integrating pictures with the text emerged. The fact that this tradition was not pursued…elsewhere, except in Venice, fascinated the late Hanns Hammelmann. He devoted years of patient research to unravelling the life-stories and works of the artists who speciialized in book illustration. In his lifetime Mr. Hammelmann published articles on several of the better-known artists including Fuseli, Vanderbank, Stothard, and the prolific Taylor family. An early death prevented him from assembling his further notes and reshaping the published material, with the object of creating a biographical dictionary of the artists and a catalogue of their works. Dr. T. S. A. Boase has, however, assembled the material and added to it, as well as providing an essay stating his own views on the subject. Here then is a biographical dictionary of 263 artists who practised between 1700 and 1800, with lists and details of all the books that they respectively illustrated. Much of the material is new to the history of English art and literature and it throws a vivid and unexpected light on both.
