Reprint. Zustand: Gut. pp. 333-339. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Cover a bit light edged, rubbed und stained, author's name handwritten on cover, paper browned, otherwise clean. - From the text: The approximate equivalence of certain adjective forms and the genitive forms of the corresponding nouns has long been recognized by scholars. Wackernagel, after a brief consideration of the phenomenon in both Greek and Latin, concluded that attempts to distinguish differences in meaning had in general been unsuccessful. In regard to the most striking example of this phenomenon in Plautus, the use of erilis and eri, recent scholars have not been satisfied with Wackernagel's skepticism. Löfstedt doubts the equivalence of erilis and eri. He thinks that the adjective is regularly used with phrases spoken with a certain "Verehrung", and that in any case its uses are specialized and in general limited to certain set expressions. Haffter enthusiastically approves this opinion, observing that erilis in contrast to eri occurs in contexts of especially strong feeling. He points to the opening of the Mostellaria, where the Eumaeus-like Grumio indulges in various "pathetic" types of expression including the phrase erilis permities.
