Paperback. Zustand: Good. (On The Shoulders Of Giants series). Stephen Hawkings edits and provides commentary on this groundbreaking work that revolutionized astronomy in its proposal of a heliocentric universe in which planets orbit the sun, challenging the centuries-old Ptolemaic ideal of the earth as the center of the universe. This essay by Copernicus (1473-1543) pioneered the path from Galileo and Newton, whose theories stemmed from the Copernican model. Black-and-white illustrations. 408p.

Includes Introduction; Appendix: Computability and Effective Calculability, and On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem. A Correction; Acknowledgments; and About Stephen Hawking. "Best-selling author and physicist Stephen Hawking explores the "masterpieces" of mathematics through 31 landmark works, spanning 2,500 years and representing 17 mathematicians. From the geometry of Euclid, through the calculus of Newton, the probabilities of Laplace to the thought of Boole, this extraordinary volume allows readers to peer into the mind of genius by providing them with excerpts from the original mathematical proofs and results. It also charts the progression of mathematical thought - granting the reader a solid understanding of the very foundations of some of our current technologies." from the rear outer jacket. "The age in which we live is the age in which we are discovering the fundamental laws of nature. - Richard Feynman, 1964. "From e-commerce to flying in airplanes and spacecraft, mathematics enables almost every aspect of our lives in this post-industrial age. But exactly what are the areas of mathematics that make these things possible? And just what was it that made someone sit up and think, 'I must solve this!' In the follow-up volume to the best-selling On the Shoulders of Giants.world-renowned author and physicist Stephen Hawking presents thirty-one landmarks of mathematical thought. From basic geometry through the theory of transfinite numbers, this comprehensive volume traces the work of 17 mathematicians over 2,500 years. Each chapter is laid out in an accessible format: A biography of each mathematician which discusses the significance of the mathematical research; The full proof of the work, reproduced from the original publication. In addition, three significant results are translated, for the first time, into English." - from the inner front jacket flap "Over the centuries, the efforts of these mathematicians has helped the human race achieve great insight into nature." - from the introduction, by Stephen Hawking. Revolutions in thought and how we perceive the world around us have always occurred with revolutions in mathematical thought. Mathematics has been integral to the development of physical science. But it also stands as an independent discipline pursued for its own sake. The work of Karl Weierstrass, Georg Cantor, George Boole, Alan Turing, Kurt Godel, and others have all built on the work of their predecessors, stretching as far back as the Babylonians and the Greeks. And their work, in turn, feeds the new theories being developed by contemporary researchers. Hawking posits that, if the wonders of the ancient world were physical (like the pyramids), then the wonders of our world are the works of the intellect. This volume gathers some of the brightest minds in one place and discusses the influences on and impact of their work." - from the rear inner jacket flap.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. Xii, 527 Pp. Maroon Cloth Stamped In Silver. First Printing With Statement "First Published 1981". Highly Technical Collection Of Pedagogical Lectures Given At A Workshop On Supergravity Organized By Hawking, Including A Number Of Specialized Articles Which Reflect The Most Recent Research (In 1981). Fine In Fine Dj, No Marks Or Wear. Per Wikipedia, "Supergravity (Supergravity Theory; Sugra For Short) Is A Modern Field Theory That Combines The Principles Of Supersymmetry And General Relativity; This Is In Contrast To Non-Gravitational Supersymmetric Theories Such As The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Supergravity Is The Gauge Theory Of Local Supersymmetry. Since The Supersymmetry (Susy) Generators Form Together With The Poincaré Algebra A Superalgebra, Called The Super-Poincaré Algebra, Supersymmetry As A Gauge Theory Makes Gravity Arise In A Natural Way. Like Any Field Theory Of Gravity, A Supergravity Theory Contains A Spin-2 Field Whose Quantum Is The Graviton. Supersymmetry Requires The Graviton Field To Have A Superpartner. This Field Has Spin 3/2 And Its Quantum Is The Gravitino. The Number Of Gravitino Fields Is Equal To The Number Of Supersymmetries." Supergravity Was Of Interest In The Early 1980'S, Lost Favor Due To Inconsitencies, But Aspects Were Modified And It Is Again Of Some Active Scientific Interest.

First edition of this work on space. Octavo, original cloth. From the library of Stephen Hawking with his name written on the front free endpaper. Stephen Hawking was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge at the time of his death. Hawking's scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. He was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Hawking may be one of the most recognizable of theoretical physicists in part due to ALS, which gradually paralyzed him over the decades. After the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating deviceâ"initially through use of a handheld switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle. He is also well known since he achieved commercial success with several works of popular science in which he discussed his theories and cosmology in general. His book, A Brief History of Time, appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. Hawking's works are mentioned a number of times in these lectures, as Hawking published 'Singularities and the geometry of space-time' in 1966, and he and mathematician George Ellis wrote a treatise in 1973 entitled, The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional association from this giant in the world of theoretical physics. These reports, at the forefront of relativity theory when they were written, in particular the geometrical aspects of spacetime theory, were the result of the Alfred Schild Memorial Lecture Series presented at the University of Texas at Austin beginning in 1977. Each article is a self-contained summary of an important area of contemporary gravitational physics, while the book as a whole provides an overview of a wide variety of the problems of general relativity and gravitation.
