1st Edition. 414 x 330 mm. (16 1/4 x 14"). viii pp., [1] leaf (contents), [60] leaves of description, iv pp. (list of subscribers). REGAL CONTEMPORARY BURGUNDY STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT, covers bordered by decorative roll, central panel framed by multiple gilt fillets and palmette roll, royal arms of Great Britain at center, enclosed within a fillet lozenge and octagon, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments, that at head and tail with large ornate fleurons composed of lancet and palmette tools, gilt lettering, turn-ins with delicate gilt palmette roll, leather hinges, bright blue endleaves, all edges gilt. Very expertly rebacked, retaining original backstrip. Engraved title page with vignette (uncolored), and 53 SUPERB HAND-COLORED AQUATINT PLATES, including the arms of the dedicatee, the Duke of Wellington, an allegorical frontispiece, and 51 martial scenes, mostly battles, all with original tissue guards. WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR OF ONE OF THE PLATES (The meeting of the Emperors of Russia and Austria, King of Prussia, & Crown Prince of Sweden in the Great Square of Leipzig, Oct. 18th, 1813) SIGNED W. Heath 1814. A Large Paper Copy. Abbey Life 365; Prideaux, p. 34; Tooley 281. Slight variation in color of spine leather, a bit of shelfwear to tail edge of boards, just a hint of wear elsewhere; tissue guards somewhat foxed, but text and plates happily unaffected. AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY--entirely clean, fresh, and bright internally with vibrant coloring, in a stately binding brimming with extravagantly glittering gilt. In a spectacular period binding, this monumental copy of Jenkins' tribute to the British army is accompanied by an original watercolor by its illustrator. Dedicated to the Duke of Wellington, who, Jenkins writes in the dedicatory letter, has "raised the character of the British soldier in the scale of humanity," this volume is a celebration of the victory of Britain and its allies in the Napoleonic Wars. The richly colored plates are the work of William Heath (1794/5-1840); his original watercolor offered with our volume corresponds to the plate "Entrance of the Allied Sovereigns into Leipsic [sic]," commemorating a decisive victory for Britain and its allies that ended Napoleon's occupation east of the Rhine, and paved the way for his eventual total defeat. The watercolor reveals a notable level of delicacy, with carefully rendered details emerging from the hazy clouds of battle. Now best remembered for his career as a cartoonist and caricaturist, Heath began as a military painter, with the present work being his best known from the period. Full of movement and drama, his scenes depict pivotal moments from major British military campaigns and are accompanied by descriptions of each battle, often including excerpts from the letters or reports of the officers involved. In addition to its memorable binding and its early watermarks, our copy is distinguished by its size--it measures a full three inches taller than the Abbey copy, with broad, impressive margins around the text and illustrations. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. ONE OF 100 LARGE PAPER COPIES per Abbey. …

London, Constable & Co. Ltd. 1912. 4to. Original pale green cloth with large onlaid pictorial label to upper board surrounded by rococo flourishes in gilt, top edges green; pp. [xvi] + 254; illustrated with 16 fine mounted coloured, and tissue-guarded, plates and line drawings throughout in profusion; a fine copy in exceptional condition both internally and externally, with only the faintest speckling to endpapers and fore-edge of book block; scarce in this condition.First edition, first issue, of this sought-after, and elusive, children's classic by the famed cartoonist and inventor of whimsically elaborate machines to complete basic everyday tasks. The name Heath Robinson has entered the lexicon to describe a particular brand of British eccentricity. In this fairy tale Heath Robinson weaves together a ridiculous, and riotous, series of events which exploit this talent. The main protagonist, a 15 year-old-boy named Bill, devises an array of gadgets to solve the problems faced by the eccentric figures he meets on his adventures. These include characters as diverse as the green-toed button crane of Baraboo, and a Sicilian cleaning lady. Given the task of looking after his younger cousins Boadicea and Chad, Bill and the two youngsters enjoy a loosely connected series of mind-bending experiences as the story unfurls.Following the great success of his first major work, the masterpiece Uncle Lubin (1902), Heath Robinson followed up with another fantasy about a guardian of the young, but this time a champion child minder, Bill. The book is made up of 16 crazy stories which combine to form a work which the artist himself referred to as "not a book for children". Constable, the publisher, commissioned 125 line drawings, which are very finely executed and among Heath Robinson's best work, as well as 16 plates of jewel-like colour which surpass, in quality, much of his output. The publisher was probably experiencing financial pressures at the time of publication because far fewer of the expensive coloured plates were printed than sets of sheets, and only a relatively small run of the first issue of the book was produced in this decorative publisher's binding. Remainder sheets were issued subsequently in a much plainer red cloth, with half the number of plates. Interestingly three of the illustrator's children, Joan, Oliver and Alan, appear in one of the coloured plates.…

Exhibiting a Real Picture of Characters, Manners, &c. in High and Low Life, in Dublin and Various Parts of Ireland. Embellished with Humorous Coloured Engravings, From Original Designs by the most eminent Artists. By a Real Paddy. London: Jones and Co. and J.J. Marks, 1821. First edition. Tall octavo (8 3/4 x 5 11/16 in; 226 x 142 mm). vii, [1, blank], 6-296 pp. Frontispiece and eighteen hand-colored plates by and after William Heath, Henry Alken, and others (all bound together before text). Original quarter green cloth over blue paper boards with printed spine label, rebacked with original backstrip laid down. Some rubbing and light soiling to boards, spine label a little chipped, some soiling to plate margins not affecting image. A very good copy of a scarcely seen book. "Though not so good it is more rare than [Egan's] Life in London" (Tooley). "Real Life in Ireland was initially shunned by educated readers and even a quick glance at the language and misdeeds of the central characters, Brian Boru and Sir Shawn O'Doherty, reveal that such a publication may once have been able to cause and give offence. However, Real Life in Ireland is more akin to the works of Flann O'Brien and although written nearly 200 years ago is very readable and very funny. "Opening with the discharge of Shawn O'Dogherty from college in Dublin with a small fortune to spend, he is joined from the country by his friend Brian Boru, who along the way is regaled by the stories of Peg O'Shambles, a one-time cockle picker from Ringsend in Dublin, who has fallen on hard times due to her alcoholic husband's misdeeds. Accompanied by many humorous cartoons of Brian Boru's adventures, the characters travel from Belfast to make merry in Dublin. While the characters in Real Life in Ireland might be fictitious the places, events and the Hiberno-Irish featured throughout are not. Although a comparison with James Joyce's travels through Dublin is perhaps hardly appropriate, Real Life in Ireland provides a clear account of Dublin and its inhabitants, as well as the major sights and attractions of its suburbs. Perhaps unintentionally, Real Life in Ireland has left an account of the 'real' trials and tribulations of Ireland in the 1820s. For example, the new harbour at Dalkey is rightly criticised as a waste of money and time the long awaited visit of George IV lamented, but not much regretted." "All-in-all.Real Life in Ireland make[s] for a highly entertaining and extremely funny read and has much to recommend it to a modern readership that might be unfamiliar with its kind" (Eneclann).
