Ein Relief aus der Prometheus-Sage brachte ihm ein Stipendium für Rom ein, wo er die Gefesselte Andromeda" (1869/70) vollendete. Nach einer Studienreise durch Deutschland und Frankreich schuf er zahlreiche Denkmäler und Skulpturen, vor allem für die Wiener Ringstraße. 1900 entstand sein Goethe-Denkmal (Bronze) am Opernring, 1923 das Johann-Strauß-Denkmal (Bronze mit Marmorrelief) im Stadtpark. Von 1882-1922 lehrte er an der Wiener Akademie, deren Rektor er 1905 war.
