TWO VOLUME COMPLETE SET. "New Impression" (as stated upon each volume's respective title page - early reprint as set was first published in 1898). Each hardcover, H 21.25cm x L 14.25cm. No dust jackets (i.e. lacking). Red cloth bindings; strong mottling to sunned spines; some flaking loss to spines' gilt lettering but all still easily legible; spine ends bumped/frayed; strong mottling to Vol. II's rear board but boards otherwise have lighter mottling and soiling. Text blocks' top edges darkened; some foxing to toned fore-edges and bottom edges. Each volume with personal bookplate of presumed secondary owner British collector C.W. Christie-Miller [Charles Wakefield Christie-Miller] on their respective front pastedowns ; bookplate illustrated with statue/fountain of child holding fish with foreground of flowers and 1911 date along with small compass diagram at bottom center with latter also serving as an artist monogram for Joseph Walter West, a noted British bookplate designer who donated a large collection of his work to The British Museum in 1908. Ink ownership inscriptions of set's first owner (presumed by date) "G.D. Chapman. | [illegible-address?] | 1900." on each volume's half-title. Interior foxing generally strongest on several initial and rear leaves with other occurrences mostly at plates; interior leaves mostly remain clean. Volume I binding slightly shaken between ffep verso and half-title but text block otherwise firm; Volume II's binding retains some crispness. *** VOLUME I: i-xxvii, [1], 1-447 pages plus 32 page advertising section. With Introduction by Field-Marshal The Right Hon. Viscount Wolseley (pages vii-xvi), Preface (pages xvii-xxiii), two b/w portraits (including frontispiece) on unpaged leaves as called for, total of fifteen maps (thirteen b/w, one b/w foldout, one color foldout) on unpaged leaves also all present as called for, and publisher's concluding 32 page "Messrs. Longmans, Green, & Co.'s Classified Catalogue of Works in General Literature." *** VOLUME II: [8], 1-528 pages. Features a total of eighteen b/w maps (three of which are foldouts) on unpaged leaves also all present as called for plus concluding Index for both volumes. No tipped-in errata slip as was issued with earlier editions (presumably Longmans made the needed text corrections). *** Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 4.5 pounds (2 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
