In 1656, Sir Henry Vane the Younger was summoned before the Lord Protector and his Council for publishing A Healing Question Propounded and Resolved, a tract that urged reconciliation among Parliament's fractured factions. Though couched in the language of unity and godly purpose, the book was seen by Cromwell's government as a veiled critique of the Protectorate and a rallying cry for republican resistance. Vane, a former leading figure in the Long Parliament and a committed advocate of constitutional liberty, refused to recant or acknowledge the Council's authority over his conscience. The proceedings, though not a formal trial, marked a turning point in the Commonwealth's intolerance of dissent even from its former architects, and foreshadowed Vane's eventual downfall under the restored monarchy. 5 pages, printed in double columns. Two-Volume DELUXE LARGE PAPER LIMITED FIRST EDITION numbered by publisher on printed limitation page. Two volumes complete. Original orange cloth boards with gilt coat of arms on front covers, navy spines and corners with gilt lettering spines, TEG, original dark greenish navy coated EPs, untrimmed fore-edge and bottom edge both volumes. Both volumes have loss of much of the spine covering (see photos), but bindings are very solid and not broken or cracked. This set is an obvious candidate for rebacking. The covers have significant rubbing along edges and corners but the boards are relatively clean and bright with a few faint dark smudges (nothing serious). Each volume has previous owner's bookplate and small bookseller ticket on front pastedown otherwise no owner marks or writing on any pages, Some fore-edge foxing is present but nearly all pages are completely free of foxing and are clean.
