Professor Herbert Bloch of Harvard University had originally intended to include some introductory paragraphs to his two volume history of Monte Cassino in the Middle Ages to explain the bombing of the Monastery in February 1944. Instead, Bloch produced a detailed survey of the available literature on the battles for Cassino and the arguments surrounding the bombing of the monastery. His conclusion was that 'the bombardment of Monte Cassino remains and will remain forever a disgrace to our time and our civilization.'.
