Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. xviii+271+[27 ad] pages with photographs, diagrams, table. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First published in 1925 by the American Chess Bulleting. In 1924 New York staged a great tournament by having the three giants of the age: Capablanca, Lasker and Alekhine. It was something like a rematch of the 1914 St Petersburg tournament, with all of them 10 years older. There was a good mixture of veterans (Janowski, Marcozy and Marshall) with younger hypermoderns (Reti, Tartakower and Bogoljubow), though some top challengers (Vidmar, Nimzowitsch and Rubinstein) were absent. Everyone expected World Champion Capablanca to win and wondered how Lasker, the 55 year old dethroned lion would perform. Lasker ran away with the tournament, scoring a phenomenal 80% against the elite of the chess world. Brilliancy prizes went to Reti for his win over Bogoljubow, Marshall for his win over Bogolijubow and to Capablanca for his win over Lasker. The event was crowned by Alekhine's deep annotations in a book that is still popular and well received by chess society. There are some mistakes but this is probably the best tournament book written, rivaled only by Bronstein's Zurich 1953. Condition: Corners bumped, light edge wear else very good.

The tournament took place in the Hotel Alamac from the 16th of March to the 18th of April 1924. The participants were Dr. Emanuel Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Marshall, Janowski, Maroczy, Bogolyubov, Reti, Tartakover, Edward Lasker and Yates. The time limit was 30 moves in two hours and 15 moves per hour thereafter. Capablanca was expected to be the winner but the 55-year-old Dr. Lasker proved that he was by no means a spent force and ran away with the tournament. In a number of ways, the tournament paralleled the St Petersburg (1914) tournament with the top three place getters ten years older. It was also notable for Reti's use of his own opening, resulting in Capablanca's first tournament loss in eight years, and a number of masterpieces that were created.A silver cup and $75 in gold went to Reti for his win over Bogolyubov in Round 12."--Chessgames ; clipped front endpaper ; store stamp on front inside cover, else VG.
