"I bin a stiller Zecher", "Schön ist so ein Ringelspiel", "Die Novaks aus Prag" und "Da wär's halt gut, wenn man Englisch könnt'". Der beliebte jüdisch-österreichische Komponist, Kabarettist und Klavierhumorist (1888…-1958) war ein weit über die Grenzen Österreichs hinaus bekannter Verfasser von Wienerliedern und Chansons. Nach dem Anschluß Österreichs 1938 versuchte er in die Tschechoslowakei zu fliehen, der mit Flüchtlingen überfüllte Zug wurde aber an der Grenze von den Tschechen zurückgeschickt. Er bereitete dann seine Emigration in die USA vor, wurde aber kurz vor der Abreise von den Nazis, die ihn irrtümlich für den Komponisten des Dollfußliedes "Lied der Jugend" hielten, verhaftet und ins KZ Dachau, später nach Buchenwald geschickt. Dort schrieb er allerdings zusammen mit Fritz Löhner-Beda das Buchenwaldlied. Nachdem ein Zeuge belegen konnte, daß er das Dollfußlied nicht geschrieben hatte, konnten ihn seine Frau und deren Eltern, die bereits in den USA waren, "freikaufen" und ein Affidavit schicken. Als er amerikanischen Boden betrat küsste er diesen Boden, eine Geste die als Pressebild rund um die Welt ging und ihm den Einstieg in das amerikanische Unterhaltungsgeschäft wesentlich erleichterte, so daß er auch dort bald sehr erfolgreich war. Nachdem Krieg kam er nach Österreich zurück und konnte da in kürzester Zeit fast nahtlos dort weitermachen wo er 1938 zwangsweise aufhören mußte. (2. Exemplar wie oben. Sein Vater war der jüdische Religionslehrer Levi Hersch, die Mutter die Jüchenerin Johanna Heymann. Er besuchte die Jüchener Elementarschule, anschließend die evangelische Rektoratschule in Wickrathberg. Er arbeitete… ab 1837 als Lehrling in einer Düsseldorfer Kolonialwarenhandlung. Drei Jahre später trat er als Kommis in die Kolonialwarenhandlung Simon Mertens ein. Er studierte ab 1847 an der Universität Bonn. Er lebte später in Berlin als freier Schriftsteller. Sein größter Erfolg war "Die Anna-Liese". Dieses fünfaktige Lustspiel wurde 1858 in Hamburg uraufgeführt. Es behandelt die Liebe des jungen Leopold von Dessau, der im fortgeschrittenen Alter wegen militärischer Verdienste als "preußischer Held" galt, zu der Apothekertochter Anna aus Dessau. Die Kritiker und das Publikum waren begeistert, so schrieb etwa Franz Liszt einen Lobesbrief an den Dramatiker. Die handschriftliche Abschrift wurde vermutlich 1868 von Paul Picard aus Schlotheim (ehemaliger Stadtkämmerer in Schlotheim?) angefertigt. 122 S., 18x22,5 cm. Schöne, saubere Handschrift.
