Glass's Birch Creek property in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, transferring a 56.4-acre parcel designated as Plot No. 1 to a buyer named E.W. Bennett. There is also a fairly detailed plat of 266 acres retained by Glass. Local surveyor Joshua Hightower plotted the boundaries following a Post-Civil War land transaction in Southside Virginia, where large agricultural tracts were frequently partitioned during Reconstruction. Accompanying documents concern land purchases by E.W. Bennett.One of the survey plats centers on the 56.4-acre lot traversed by a meandering stream branch. Physical markers denote each boundary vertex, including a red oak, a white oak, an embedded rock, and wooden stakes, alongside bearings measured in poles and links. The southern boundary fronts directly on the main thoroughfare linking Danville to Halifax Court House, adjoining the land of Hugh Dodson, while the eastern edge borders the property of Dr. J. W. White. A compass rose with shaded points anchors the upper left corner, complemented by a linear scale of twenty poles to the inch. A detailed metes-and-bounds transcript signed by Hightower appears across the lower third of the sheet, documenting the exact courses and distances that define the perimeter. Marginal writing indicates that Glass assisted in plotting the draft, reflecting the collaborative process between Southside landowners and local surveyors during late nineteenth-century estate divisions.Another survey plat concerns a larger tract of 266 3/4 acres, "for Mr. Jno. B. Glass, the reserved portion of his land lying on both sides of Birch Creek in Pittsylvania County."The group also includes three manuscript deed documents.John Billups Glass (ca. 1823 1888), was a mid-nineteenth-century Pittsylvania County, Virginia, planter-farmer and landowner from an established local Glass Jennings Billups family network. Married to Prudence Tompkins Hubbard, he belonged to the county s slaveholding agricultural class before the Civil War and was substantial enough to hold multiple enslaved people by 1860. His real estate consisted of agricultural land in Pittsylvania County acquired and held through the 1850s, although the exact acreage and tract locations require reconstruction from the county land-tax books and deed records; surviving deed indexes show him active as a property owner during that decade.
