The four miniatures show Scenes from the Life of Christ and were produced in Bruges, c. 1525-30. From the introduction: "The present group of four miniatures, which have been attributed to Bening since they were first published in 1910, were painted for a member of the important Spanish family of Enriquez de Ribera. They have never been systematically studied, because they have been in a French private collection for nearly a century. In fact, two miniatures among the four have never before been described or reproduced. The identification of a group of eleven sister leaves and cuttings, assembled here for the first time, makes possible a reassessment of the place of the Enriquez de Ribera manuscript in Bening's corpus." From the Foreword: "This catalogue, and the exhibition it accompanies, grew out of two interrelated concerns; a conviction of the aesthetic value of illuminations as independent works of art in their own right and a conviction in the scholarly necessity of studying illuminated leaves and cuttings as membra disjecta from books. For this reason, the body of the catalogue is composed of two independant [sic] sections, presenting complementary descriptions of each of the forty-three items. Section 1 focuses on the artistic content (the style and iconography) and the historical context of items. Entries in Section I adapt a standard format used for catalogues of drawings, including at the beginning basic information on physical description, provenance, and literature. Entries in Section I thus treat the items as they were considered when they were collected, that is, as miniature paintings by (usually) identifiable artists. In this section, I have therefore deliberately refrained from discussing the items as fragments from books. Section II focuses on the codicological descriptions of items. Entries in Section II adapt a standard format of scholarly cataloguing that has gradually evolved for leaves and cuttings, in which they are treated as fragments from books, with all the implications resulting from this method. From the introduction - " In the fifteenth century, the First History Bible, or Eerste Hisloriebijbel, was one of the most popular books in the North Netherlands. Its text consisted basically of a juxtaposition of the Bible with Petrus Comestor's twelfth century Historia Scholastica, executed so that each passage from the Bible immediately preceded the relevant commentary on that passage from the Historia Scholastica. Thirty-six manuscripts (see Appendix I) of this text are extant, and at least twelve other manuscripts are known to have existed, for the text has been identified on twelve single-folio fragments. Of these thirty-six manuscripts, fourteen received illustrations; the remainder are simply written copies of the text. Contemporary colophons reveal the approximate period of production of the illustrated exemplars: the earliest manuscript (Brussels, Bibliothèque royale, Ms. 9018-23) is dated 1431; and the latest (London, British Library, Add.
