Lucy Hutchinson was the widow of Col. John Hutchinson, a strongly Puritan soldier who became one of the great mainstays of the Parliamentary cause. The Governor of Nottingham Castle, after the war Hutchinson became MP for Nottingham and was one of the Regicides - those who signed the death warrant of King Charles I. He fell out with Oliver Cromwell when the latter was proclaimed Lord Protector. At the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, Hutchinson was condemned to death as a Regicide, and despite a plea for his life by his loyal wife Lucy, he was executed. His widow wrote her husbandâs Memoirs to restore his reputation, and they swiftly became the best-known account of the war from the Roundhead side.This volume also contains Lucyâs own autobiography - itself a valuable insight into the life of a well-educated and articulate 17th century radical woman; and an account of the siege of Lathom House in Lancashire, held for the King against the New Model Army of Sir Thomas Fairfax by another redoubtable Civil War woman - albeit one fighting for the Royalist cause- the Countess of Derby.

Ryder Haggard, who wrote the Introduction for this work. It is a biography that includes a joint adventure by Jebb and Haggard to find Montezuma's treasure. It was called off after the unexpected death of Haggard's son. Much of the action takes place in the Western states, which were a bit wilder back in those days. Frontis. photo portrait of Jebb with facsimile signature and tissue guard. *** The book comes with a protective mylar jacket. This book is in my inventory and the image is of this particular item. *** Bound in wine red pictorial cloth boards with gilt lettering on front cover and on spine. Covers have light wear and soil with a few small areas of discoloration on edges, spine slightly sunned. Floral decorated end papers. The contents are clean and complete in a good binding. A few pages in ad section with short closed tear on top edge, repaired with clear archival tape. Front free end paper chipped on fore edge, back free end paper with three small closed tears repaired on verso with clear archival tape. VG. *** 7.5 inches tall by 5.25 inches.
