Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+. First Edition; First Printing. First Edition (1988) unstated in accordance with Princeton University Press' custormary practice at the time of publication. Very Good+ in a Very Good+ DJ: The Book shows a former owner's name at the front free endpaper and a small rectangle of sticker residue at the upper corner of same; the binding leans slightly while remaining secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing minor, imperfections. Bright and clean. Corners sharp. The DJ shows just a touch of wear to the corner tips and head and heel of the backstrip; mild rubbing to a couple of spots on the front panel; else flawless. Remains attractive and intact. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo (9.5 x 6.5 x 0.7 inches). Language: English. Weight: 13.5 ounces. Indigo cloth over boards with gilt titles at the backstrip. Hardback with DJ. Systems governed by non-linear differential equations are of fundamental importance in all branches of science, but our understanding of them is still extremely limited. In this book a particular system, describing the interaction of magnetic monopoles, is investigated in detail. The use of new geometrical methods produces a reasonably clear picture of the dynamics for slowly moving monopoles. This picture clarifies the important notion of solitons, which has attracted much attention in recent years. The soliton idea bridges the gap between the concepts of "fields" and "particles," and is here explored in a fully three-dimensional context. While the background and motivation for the work comes from physics, the presentation is mathematical. This is a must read for understanding monopoles. There is no alternative. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; vii, 133 pages.

This book is interdisciplinary and addresses concerns of theoretical physicists interested in elementary particles or general relativity and mathematicians working in analysis or geometry. The interaction between geometry and physics through non-linear partial differential equations is now at a very exciting stage, and the book is a contribution to this activity. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
