ISBN-13: 9781616196622. ISBN-10: 1616196629. A Witty Homage to the Working Lawyer's Life Hoeflich, M. H. Notes from the Commonplace Book of a Legal Antiquarian. Clark, New Jersey: Talbot Publishing, November 2021. xii, 38 pp. ISBN-13: 9781616196622. ISBN-10: 1616196629. Paperback. New. $12.95 * Nestle into a comfortable old chair, pour a glass of a fine vintage port and enjoy a pleasant evening's entertainment. In the tradition of commonplacing, the recording of extracts from favorite texts, the author has selected sixteen pieces of poetry, prose and legal ephemera from his vast personal library for the enjoyment of his friends-and he considers anyone who reads this volume a friend. These selections on lawyers and the law include ten pieces of prose, four poems, one original essay and a menu from a dinner given by a Harvard Law School social club in 1893. With wit, charm and introspection, they span the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries, paying homage to the lawyer's life, "one of unwearied exertion"-for better or worse.

ISBN-13: 9781616190590; ISBN-10: 1616190590. With a New Introduction by Michael Hoeflich Ferriere, Claude Joseph de. [Beaver, John, Translator]. [Duck, Sir Arthur]. The History of the Roman or Civil Law. Shewing Its Origin and Progress; How, and When the Several parts of It Were First Compil'd; With Some Account of the Principal Writers and Commentators Thereupon; And the Method to be Observ'd in Studying the Same. Written Originally in French. To Which is Added, Dr. Duck's Treatise on the Use and Authority of the Civil Law in England. [With] The History of the Origine of the French Laws, Translated from the French by J.B. Esq., With a Preface and Notes Shewing, the Analogy of the Laws of the Antient Gauls and Britons. Originally published: London: Printed for D. Browne, 1724. [xii], iv, [2], 169, xxxviii, [8], vii, 105, 7 pp. Reprinted 2005, 2010 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. With a New Introduction by Michael Hoeflich, John H. & John M. Kane Professor of Law, University of Kansas School of Law. ISBN-13: 9781616190590; ISBN-10: 1616190590. Paperback. New. $17.95 * Through the influence of Doctors' Commons and the universities the civilians played an important role in the development of English law, especially in the fields of commercial, estate and admiralty law. Despite its value, study of the civil law had entered a moribund phase by the eighteenth century. Several student handbooks attempted to correct this deficiency, and Beaver's translation of Ferriere's treatise is among the best. Accompanied by Duck's learned essay that connects the civil law to the common law, the work is among the first in English to establish the confluence of these legal traditions. Also included is Beaver's translation of The History of the Origine of the French Laws, Translated from the French by J.B. Esq., Shewing, the Analogy of the Laws of the Antient Gauls and Britons. First published anonymously in 1703, it has been attributed to Ferriere, Gabriel Argou and Claude Fleury. Claude Joseph de Ferriere [ca. 1680-ca. 1748] was a well known French jurisconsult, dean of the Faculty of Law in Paris and the author of legal treatises and an important legal dictionary, Dictionnaire de Droit et de Pratique.

Bottom of spine slightly bumped, bottom page edges lightly soiled. $20. * The professional behavior of lawyers was a topic that attracted a good deal of attention during the nineteenth century. It was examined directly in bar rules, essays and books and indirectly in biographies, histories, testimonials and funeral orations. Despite the quality and range of this literature, some of it produced by such eminent jurists as Joseph Story and David Dudley Field, it is mostly forgotten today. This is due in part to the assumption that these writings are out of date. It is also difficult to locate many of the finest examples. Compiled from a broad array of scarce materials, Sources on the History of the American Law of Lawyering invites a reappraisal of the history of lawyering during the nineteenth century and addresses topics on legal ethics and professional behavior that are as relevant today as they were in the nineteenth century.

Niven was a lawyer and con-man who cheated his victims, all incarcerated prostitutes, pickpockets and other petty criminals. Since it involved a corrupt lawyer, criminals and venal jailors, his trial was a perfect subject for a trial report, one of the most popular genres of antebellum literature. This trial, frequently cited in later histories of American law, is equally important as an early source for the history of legal malpractice litigation in the U.S. and its description of the practice of a lawyer at the margins of the profession. The affidavits of Niven's victims also provide a great deal of vital information about the daily lives of prisoners in the early decades of the Republic. William Sampson [1764-1836] was an Irish rights activist whose part in the Uprising of 1798 led to his relocation to New York, where he engaged in a successful law career.
